RSS Menu App Reviews

And So?

Ive used this app for several years. It was working flawless. Decided to purchase this version (had doneted before), and it constantely crashes at launch on my iMac running 10.6.8. Deleted all the files related to RSS Menu, nothing helps. Reverted to 1.1.12. No good.!!

Nice an simple

Its a nice and simple RSS reader like in the first days of RSS. The option to use the default RSS feed icon in the menu is a nice touch. I use this to keep an eye on urgent updates, i.e. "server down", in addition to my regular news feed in Google Reader. One thing that would make this perfect for me is an option to "Show all items in a flat list, dont groups by feed)" Thank you.

i liked this until discover the Gruml

I liked to use RSS Menu (specially because of the location at menu bar), but it was always terrible the lack of sync with Google Reader.. so now (even though I lost 1,99$) Im just using the Gruml, which was free, it has a good interface and let me sync with GR - so I dont need to delete or mark as read in several places (iPad, iPhone, and Mac).. I hope you develop this better in future..

love this little menu app!

This has made keeping up with my RSS feeds waaaay easier (I subscribe to a lot). Theres way too much bloatware out there, and this app is clean & functional, and with the ability to nest folders, customizable — and only 1.4 MB! Just a drop-down menu and a scan of the headlines so I can see whether I want to check out any articles further — no waiting for an app to open and load/update feeds, just instant access to headlines. You can add folders ("groups") in the prefs panel and nest them via drag & drop, so feeds can be organised according to your needs. Im giving this 5 stars even though there are a couple of things I would like to see, like the option to turn on a page preview, but I suspect that would slow things down significantly and make this elegant little RSS solution less nimble. The feed rename is occasionally glitchy (wont take a new title), but these are minor details and are insignificant compared to the constant daily usefulness Im getting out of this app. Thanks to the developers for a great piece of software!

Great little app

Great app! Just had to click on my old feeds that weren’t supported under Mountain Lion and RSS Menu added them. Simple drop-down, simply marvellous for keeping track of my news feeds. Even notifies you. What more do you need? So simple. Best $2 I’ve spent.

Exactly what I needed!

Sharing the disappointment with fellow Safari users over the removal of RSS capabilities, Im thrilled to have found this little app that does exactly what I need. I did not want an app that would *recognize/pick-up* the rss feed link to then shunt me to a 3rd party RSS reader. I wanted the capability that Safari offered: to list the feeds I subscribed to and then read the aeticle in Safari! The added beauty was RSS Menu picked up my old feeds i had bookmarked in Safari. Well worth the price. Thanks to the devs.

new update??

Ive been using this app for almost a year now and it seems to be getting quirkier as time goes on. Ive gotten use to it not resuming the proper feed count on a reboot, but now its been giving me posts from feeds that Ive already read …at times even years old! Im hoping a new release comes out fairly soon, or I may be getting something else.

Love it!

It makes it TOO simple to keep up with lots of RSS feeds, but luckily, you can “Pause Updates," so that can’t blame it for keeping you from your work. I have been using the free (donationware) version for years, but decided to pay for the latest update when they went “Mac Store Only.” I usually boycott software that does that, but RSS Menu is just too darned good.

Works great, no crashes

This is a great RSS reader that lives in your menubar. Unlike other reviewers, the app has never crashed on me. I especially like that every story has a checkmark by it that goes away once you have read it. That makes it very easy to keep track of what you have or have not read. I do have a small nitpick: you are not able to edit the name of any of the feeds. However, when I emailed the maker of the app about this, he replied that he had already submitted at fix for this issue to Apple. So, expect an update to fix this issue soon.

Disappointed

There has still not been a fix for the issue with renaming feeds and the RSS icon doesnt change drastically when there are new articles, so it is hard to tell when there is something new to read.

Very buggy

This is a really useful app when it works. Unfortunately, this version is way buggier than the pre-app store free version. Doesnt import feed lists. Often cant paste feed addresses in. Often have to force quit it as it wont quit regularly. In short, it still needs work. I hope the developers fix it up, though, because as I said, its really useful when it works.

Simple & Unintrusive - Fantastic

RSS Menu is the first time in a decade Ive found a way to really enjoy RSS and make it part of my workflow; I credit its simplicity and the degree to which it unobtrusively blends into OS X. A few minor UI quibbles/requests: - It currently takes too much digging through the UI to add new feeds. Please add an "Add Feed" (or "Manage Feeds") item to the main menu (or make it an option in "Appearance," which is a great feature BTW). A hotkey would be even better. The holy grail would be an "auto-detect feed in frontmost browser tab." - If its possible, it would be incredibly helpful to have an option for some "mark" indicator icon other than a checkmark. If youre used to iTunes UI for podcasts, unread items are marked (which you give the option for - thanks!). But theres symbolic dissonance with an UNread item having a check next to it. Its just plain confusing! A bullet point (or really anything) would be much better - again, as an option. - The ability to select which feeds notify Growl would be awesome. ("Receive Growl alerts when this feed is updated?" would be perfect.) Other than those annoyances, this really is the easiest way Ive ever found of staying on top of the news I want to read… and you cant beat the price!

V2.1 broke many feeds

I now cant access many feeds that were available before updating - I just get grayed out menu items for them. No rhyme or reason to which feeds continue to work and which are no longer working. Please fix!

Loved it before Hate it now!!

This was the app that I had to have it keeps me up to date with all the sites I check, however this version is Buggier than the previous pre-Appstore free version! If it would work I know itd use it every day!!! But it crashes all the time and as soon as I tired to link up with goodle reader now it wont even stay open. Get the free version, if you can find it, at least it works most the time.

Feature Request and more

Would be nice to not have to wade through stuff Ive already looked at. Certain feeds it reads the same information over and over again as new…a real hassle.

Too many bugs to give it 4 or 5 stars...

Currently on 10.7.4 Lion Pros: 1) sits in menu! 2) small footprint (resource wise) Cons: 1) When I first purchased (2.1.2) it crashed on Snow Leopard (the bug was fixed just before I upgraded to Lion), and I got a response when I emailed the author, he said it was a known issue. 2) Now, when I restart my computer, all the items that were marked as read by "Mark All read" the very last time I pressed that button before restarting, come up as unread again. Pretty annoying. ( I submitted a bug report, but got no response at all.) 3) News item window (when reading a specific item) could be much bigger, or better yet, adjustable! I think if all the bugs people are having were fixed, and minor preference choices added, this could easily be the best RSS reader around!

Good Design But Lacks Common Sense

Its got a great design and small footprint but lacks consistency, doesnt store a list of feeds already marked read etc so after restarting the computer all feeds are marked unread again. Please fix this its very annoying. Thanks.

2.1.3 works for me

Some buggy versions recently, but so far 2.1.3 seems stable and performs consistently well for me. This app works great for the sort of monitoring that typically involves short messages. I use it to monitor sites for price changes and to receive alerts on updated pricing from services that support RSS updates. I shopped around for a better menu bar RSS reader when this one had bugs that stopped me from using it, but couldnt find one I liked better.

Great app

I love its simplicity. After Apple inexplicably removed RSS from OS X we were kind of left hanging. The app sits in the menubar and is easily accessible with a simple click. Contrary to what another user said, on Mountain Lion it indeed does handle RSS feeds clicked in Safari, and automatically adds them. Only suggestion would have the ability to edit the refresh interval of a feed without having to delete and re-add it. Worth the money!

RSS reader wanted!

Doesnt do what I hoped for: I found Google Reader to work much better. I sure miss the Apple RSS reader!
